PANEL POWER DISTRIBUTION CHARGING UNIT, 1960's

The unit was supplied with item A1090 to the Civil Defence depot at New Malden. Model ZA46174

Your comments:

  • This was a handy bit of kit when you had two sets of batteries (for radios) along with two generators - one on the vehicle (running off the vehicle engine) and a "chorehorse" generator (see item below this one).

    The trouble with just hooking up the odd battery and charger is that there is a lot of power about - and any shorts, and you can end up with explosions and bits of cable welded where you didn't want them!

    So this box of tricks can control two generators and two sets of batteries - just at the flick of a switch (well two switches actually)!

    I have one of these and have used it in anger at military shows in the field, where its very useful for dealing with exactly the problems I describe above.
