TAMPION GUN PLUG FOR 4inch GUN

A Tampion is a plug or cover for a large gun barrel, this one made of wood and is for a 4 inch barrel, it is used to prevent foreign matter entering the barrel when the gun is not in use, but can be removed by firing the gun in emergency situations. On the face is the early logo of the Fusiliers used during the First World War now superceded by a regimental crest replacing the round bomb shape but retaining the flames above. Under the logo is the motto 'Ubique' (everywhere) which belongs to the Royal Engineers and the Royal Artillery.
